Lab Technologist

Location: Atlantic City, NJ  |  Position Status: Full Time  |  Position Shift: Evenings
The laboratory technologist performs laboratory testing procedures and provides clinical result interpretation according to established procedures, ensuring quality standards are met.

The laboratory technologist performs tests in compliance with established departmental standards. The technologist reviews and verifies results to ensure data validity and interprets results. This position applies appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling, instrument operation, operator maintenance, application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring. The technologist also participates in the evaluation of new equipment and troubleshoots equipment problems as needed.

The laboratory technologist performs and documents quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards. This position works with the laboratory supervisor/manager to resolve quality control, patient or procedural problems and recommends enhancements to laboratory procedures.

This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participates in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree and completion of an accredited medical technology program or meets FDA qualifications for CLIA (1988 Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments) standards for all laboratory and high-complexity testing.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: MT/MLS ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) eligible or equivalent and required from 18 months of hire date or transfer. Certification must be maintained if not grandfathered from the Board of Registry (BOR) and requires participation in 12 CEUs annually.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrates the ability to perform the department-specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

Strict compliance with laboratory fraud and abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must have the ability to distinguish colors.

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances and potential injury.

This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting up to 20 lbs.

The department-specific Assessment and Evaluation Tool lists the essential functions of this position.

Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): all diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
This position reports to the laboratory manager/supervisor.
