The HIV counselor provides support, counseling and referral information for patients and families who take advantage of the rapid HIV testing performed at the City Campus Emergency Department.
The HIV counselor demonstrates understanding of community resources and communicates and collaborates effectively with agencies and hospital personnel.
The counselor is also responsible for writing medical record notes in a timely fashion and building constructive relationships with community service professional.
This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Associate's degree in a related field required. Bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited school of social work or related field preferred. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and related issues required for counselor participating in the case management component of the HIV Care Consortium.

Training for counselors will include 9 days of training over a 30-day period, plus one additional day of training around performing the HIV rapid test.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 2 years of experience in counseling required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Bilingual preferred. Demonstrates ability to work with diverse populations. Proficiency in clinical applications preferred at time of hire. Incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skills will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
Demonstrates the competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, hazardous substances and potential injury. This position requires sitting, standing, walking, stooping and crouching a majority of the workday. Works with such equipment as a computer terminal, fax machine, printer and copier.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
This position reports to the department director, manager or nursing leadership in other departments within the organization.
